Why Review the TDK EPCOS Range

TDK, through its EPCOS brand, offers one of the broadest power-capacitor ranges in the industry, spanning screw-terminal and snap-in aluminum electrolytics, DC-link film capacitors and low-inductance snubbers. The datasheets give the numbers, but the datasheet only tells part of the story. This review examines the range from the perspective of an FAE who supports customers through selection and validation, focusing on ripple and lifetime, self-inductance, layout and the way the four types work together.

Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

The screw-terminal and snap-in electrolytics are the workhorses of the DC link. The screw-terminal parts carry high current and very high ripple through a busbar connection, with endurances of 12,000 to 15,000 hours, and their large cans dissipate the ripple heating. The snap-in parts mount directly on the board with a standardized grid and offer 105 °C grades with long life. The key design point for both is that the ripple rating is a limit to stay under and the life depends exponentially on the case temperature, so a few degrees of cooling add years to the design.

On the bench the DC-link film capacitors showed their two defining advantages: they do not dry out, so their capacitance is stable over time, and their self-inductance is in the nanohenry range, so they keep the high-frequency impedance low. A film capacitor in parallel with an electrolytic gives a low-impedance bus across the frequency range, which is why modern designs use both. The benefit of the low self-inductance depends on the busbar layout, so the film capacitor and the busbar must be designed together.

Snubber Capacitors

The low-ESL snubber range is the part that most directly protects the IGBT. On evaluation hardware a snubber with about 6 nH of ESL, mounted close to the module with a tight loop, reduced the turn-off overshoot by a significant margin, while the same capacitor with a long loop helped much less. That result is the whole lesson of snubber design: the layout is part of the component. The many terminal configurations let a capacitor be matched to common high-power modules.

Documentation and Consistency

Across the range the documentation is consistent and complete, with clear ratings, ordering codes and lifetime data, which matters when a design has to be documented for an audit. The AlCap-style life calculation and the ordering-code system make it straightforward to choose a part and predict its life, and the RoHS and REACH declarations are readily available.

Verdict

The TDK EPCOS power-capacitor range earns its reputation. It covers the whole DC link and the snubber with consistent quality and documentation, from compact snap-in electrolytics to low-ESL film and snubber parts, and it stands up to testing when the ripple, temperature and layout are managed. BeiLuo holds the mainstream models in regional stock and ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents, so you can evaluate a sample and move to production without a supply gap.
